So You Think You Can Dance: Salt Lake City & Dallas auditions
Tonight, we're off to Salt Lake City and Dallas in search of America's favorite dancer. The first stop is Salt Lake City.
The first auditioner of the night is Chelsea Hightower, whose older brother paid for her dance lessons when her family was suffering financially. Her ballroom audition is nice, but it doesn't really stand out. However, she makes it straight to Vegas.
Next is Brett Banford, who has Downs syndrome and says he wants to show people that having a disability doesn't mean you can't have a normal life. He's a Special Olympics ambassador and also studies tae kwon do. His audition shows a bit of that tae kwon do training, and he's actually quite good. He gets cut, but we're glad he got a few minutes to shine.
Michael Moore's family owns a Native American dance company, which he is not involved in. He breakdances for his audition, but not very well. He doesn't show us anything we haven't seen before, and the whole thing appears to be in hyper speed. He gets cut, but at least he knows he was bad and agrees with the judges.
Now it's time for more cookie cutter breakdancing from Richard Castaneda. And it's not even GOOD cookie cutter breakdancing. Moving right along... to Robert Taylor, who falls on his face and is cut.
The first real standout of the night is Gev Manoukian, who breakdances on ice in his hometown. He has good stage presence and combines a handful of different styles in his audition. We think he'd probably show good versatility if he made it to Vegas... and fortunately, we'll have the chance to find out. He makes it to the choreography round.
Lindsey Judkins and her huge, creepy smile are next. She's a good dancer, but we're not sure of her versatility, and something about her just creeps us out. She's sent straight to Vegas.
Next is Nicole Downer, who's brought along her four small children. The audition is horrible, and it's obvious that dancing is really not her thing and she was just looking for a few minutes of fun. The audition is kind of like sitting at a bar and watching a drunk girl try to dance... and fail miserably. She gets cut.
Kelli Baker has a lot to live up to- her mother is Bonnie Story, the choreographer of High School Musical. Fortunately, she's a very engaging performer and we really like her. She makes it straight through to Vegas.
At the end of day one, Travis Wall teaches the remaining contestants a choreographed routine. Among the 18 people who make the cut is Gev Manoukian.
On to day two and Naomie Christensen. She has absolutely no personality. We practically fall asleep before she even starts to dance... if one could legitimately call what she does "dancing." She makes about a million excuses, Mary freaks out on her for wasting everyone's time, and Naomie is on her way home. While she walks out, here's a montage of people who've been cut.
Ryann Race is a strip club DJ, and his girlfriend just dumped him two weeks ago. He dances like Gumby. He reminds us of Cedric from last season, and this is not a good thing. However, for some reason, the judges put him through to the choreography round.
Next is Matt Dorame, who chooses some really weird music, but is a really good dancer. Nigel hates his shorts, but Matt makes it straight to Vegas. Thayne Jasperson is also going straight to Vegas.
Next are best friends Kortney Pearson and Michelle Stringham. Kortney has a good overall performance, but it's obvious she hasn't had a whole lot of training or recent experience. Michelle, on the other hand, comes across as very mechanical and robotic. We're not impressed with her, but the judges put both girls through to the choreography round.
End of the day and time for the choreography round with Travis Wall. Among the 16 people going to Vegas are Kortney Pearson, Michelle Stringham and Ryann Race.
Next stop, Dallas! The first hopeful of the day is Brian Davidson, who appears to be having an early onset midlife crisis or something. His audition sucks, and then he proceeds to tell the judges he doesn't care if they send him home. Well, that's a good thing- no disappointment.
Chad Agnor is a full contact fighting trainer/ballroom dance instructor/line dance and hip hop teacher. Uh... okay. Unfortunately, he tears a hamstring while he's warming up, but despite Nigel's warnings against it, he auditions anyway. Badly. He's cut, and goes home in pain.
Paige Jones annoys us within the first three seconds of her segment, long before she even takes the stage to dance. She strikes us as incredibly fake, and then when she dances she's even more fake. For some reason, she makes it to the choreography round.
Up next is popper Joshua Allen. He's not as good as Robert Muraine from Los Angeles, but he's definitely entertaining. We're not sure how he'll do with other styles of dance, but the audition goes well and he makes it to the choreography round.
Cassidy Corder tries to dance a hip hop routine to an Ashley Tisdale song. This is just wrong. Oh, and so is her dancing. She's cut. Then, Brianna Gardner sits on the floor and twitches and tries to pass it off as dancing. Also cut. Kayleigh Darling is boring. Cut times three.
John Dix and Arielle Coker audition together, but we can't help but wonder if John's only really there because Arielle wanted to be. He's very supportive of her and he's a good partner during the audition, but he doesn't stand out at all. Arielle, on the other hand, is wonderful. She makes it straight to Vegas, but John will have to stick around for the choreography round.
On that note, let's watch a montage of people who've made it to Vegas.
Steven Arner's audition starts out looking like a puppet show, minus the puppets- and the chair is not a good sign. To top it off, his Mickey Mouse ears hairdo is incredibly distracting. Not that it matters, because he can't dance to save his life anyway. He lashes out at Mary on his way out the door. Typical bad audition. Moving right along.
In tonight's final choreography round, 38 dancers make it to Vegas. They include Paige Jones and Joshua Allen.
Tomorrow night, we'll be in Washington, DC and Charleston.
