So You Think You Can Dance: Los Angeles auditions [May. 22nd, 2008|10:18 pm]

[Current Music |I'm watchin' Courage The Cowardly Dog.]

Well, another season of American Idol has ended- which means a new season of So You Think You Can Dance is beginning! (Just when we thought it was safe to give our redial buttons a rest.)

Tonight's two-hour premiere is the first audition special of the season. It's the usual mix of good and bad dancers, and some that are just plain strange.

Some of the standouts of the night:

Jonathan Anzalone, from Italy. He oozes arrogance. It turns out he's not a half bad dancer, but we can't really get past the immensely annoying personality. The judges ask him to stay for the choreography round later in the day. During that round, he's ultimately cut. He says he thinks it's because he's too beautiful for the competition. Yeah, that must be what it is.

What would a new season be without another audition from Sex? Well, it'd be one less bad audition. Is this at all different from anything he's done in the past? Is there some valid reason why the judges don't just have him escorted from the premises at this point? Nigel told him last year to never audition again. Are we supposed to have forgotten that? Needless to say, we'll be "suffering" from a lack of Sex again this season.

Then there's the vision impaired dancer, Laura Garcia. Her technique really is pretty lacking, as the judges point out, but you can't help but be inspired by her. We're glad she got at least a few minutes in the spotlight.

One of the most exciting moments of the night: the return of Twitch, who made it to Vegas last year! He came so close last season, and we really hope he makes it this year. He's already one of our favorites.

Rijiy Ames auditions in his underwear. Not really any other comment, we just figured it was worth mentioning that some moron actually danced around in his underwear in front of a few million home viewers.

This is the third year auditioning for Erika Gee. She says she never has a problem auditioning for anyone else, but the SYTYCD judges scare the crap out of her. This audition, however, goes very well. It's not necessarily anything we haven't seen before, but she's good. She makes it to Vegas. Third time's a charm.

The ballroom couple, Leonidus and Aliona, are also worth mentioning. They play off each other very well when they dance, which probably stems from the fact that they're also a couple. We're not sure how much they'll stand out in other styles of dance, with different partners, but we enjoy the audition and look forward to seeing what they do in Vegas.

Victor Kim is a typical breakdancer. We're bored. The "Gold Inferno" randomly jumps around the stage for a few minutes. We're still bored.

Another ballroom couple- Ricky Sun and Asuka Kondoh. Asuka has been sick for several days and is worried about feeling worse again during the audition, but they do very well. Asuka seems more comfortable onstage than Ricky, but they're both worthy of a ticket to Vegas.

Our favorite girl of the night is Kherington Payne, the soccer player who apparently captures the heart of last season's Dominic Sandoval. She has a great personality, and she's very energetic onstage. We hope she goes far in the competition.

The last audition of the night is from Robert Muraine, a popper and street performer. Usually we don't care for this kind of thing too much, but this guy is addictive. Once you start watching him, you just can't stop. We're not convinced he'll be able to handle choreography or another style of dance, but we're excited to give him a chance.

Next stop, Salt Lake City!
